Miquon Maths
Miquon is an exploratory discovery introduction to maths.
There is a strong emphasis on Cuisenaire rods and patterns instead of formulas to learn.
Miquon only has three levels which means that you will need to swap onto another program after grade 3.
Teacher’s lab note difficult to understand and will not suit a parent who is weak on maths.
Strengths
Out of the box mathematical thinking
All four maths operations are used form the beginning – Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Looking for an incremental homeschool math program? Saxon is a perfect fit for us - maybe it will be for you too...
Saxon Math
Saxon Math is an incremental program that teaches your child maths layer by layer with homeschool math programs from Pre-K until highschool.
The lower grades (K – 4) have a meeting book (in addition to their two workbooks) where you concentrate on time, weather/temperature charts,
skip counting, drill practice etc. We love the home program they developed for homeschoolers as a lot of the lessons involve everyday
activities for e.g. fractions are taught over 5 or 6 lessons (and then reviewed continuously) from different aspects using apples or
manipulatives or sweets. Graphs are taught using the wakeup times or favourite ice cream flavours of family members.
On looking at many other programs I have found this to appeal to all types of learners.
Saxon is also great for moms who are not strong on maths themselves.
I am one of those moms and I have found great comfort in their guide which leads me step by step through each principal.
As I am teaching my children, I am learning maths in a way that it makes sense for the first time.
Homeschoolers pack for K includes: Teachers guide and meeting book.
Homeschoolers pack for Gr 1 - 3 contains: Teacher's guide, 2 student workbooks, Meeting Book and manipulatives.
Homeschoolers pack for Gr 4 - 7 contains: Teachers guide, Tests and worksheet book, anwser key book
Strengths
Lots of drill and review,
Covers mental maths concepts
Strong on manipulatives in all lower grades, fading out round 6/7
Full teachers guide and answer keys.
The lower grades are very gentle and interestingly repetitive
From grade three the focus changes onto accuracy and speed of concepts learnt.
For the higher grades if you are a mom who is math challenged, there is a DIVE CD Rom
which is like a tutor for your child with playback & self check options.
Helps you (child & parent) think mathematically,
Skills taught incrementally.

Singapore Math
Singapore Maths is a highly rated program by the international math community.
Programs available from Pre-K until Grade 6. There is a large focus on mental maths.
We found that it moved too quickly between concepts.
There is an optional Teachers Guide available from Singapore Math directly ($20) which we did not have access to.
Singapore Maths has two separate books, text and workbook and student must move between the two.
A typical year has four books e.g. 4A and 4B workbook and 4A and 4B textbook.
There is a Home Educators guide available from Sonlight with answer keys and enrichment/hands-on activities.
Stengths
Teaches different ways to solve problems,
Re-usable text books, (workbooks consumable) not too much repetition/drill
Regular practice and review pages a big plus for children who are slower to grasp maths concepts.
