Sheltie Series by Peter Clover
A story about a Shetland Pony and his owner and the mysteries they solve and the trouble they get into. Large print, suitable for young readers.
Marguerite Henry books
White Stallion of Lippiza, Misty of the Chincoteague, Born to Trot, Justin Morgan had a Horse, Stormy, Misty’s Foal and the list goes on. Marguerite Henry is the unrivalled horsy author for children.
Thoroughbred Series, Joanna Campbell
A lovely series about the fastest horse in the world over long distances. Suitable for older readers. There are minor romances in the storyline. Some titles are: Faith in a Longshot, Shining’s Orphan, the Price of Fame and Wonder’s Sister.
Katie and the Mustang, Kathleen Duey
There are 4 books in this series. The first one has a bit of family violence in it but the other three are full of adventure as Katie tries to return to her horse, Mustang, to its original place of freedom.
Too Many Ponies for Pippa, Judith Berrisford Pippa is junior sleuth who solves many horsy mysteries. She also rescues horses that are going to be used in the horse meat trade.
The following horse story book reviews are part of the Treasured Horse Collection by Scholastic Books. Changing times, Deborah Felder is about a Tennessee’s Walking Horse who is due to be sold but his owner proves that he is not redundant in the face of modern inventions. Pride of the Green Mountains, Karen Greenberg Baker A story about the worth of a trusty Morgan and his young owner who is determined to keep him as part of the family. Spirit of the West, Joanna N Malcolm A story of an Indian girl who leaves her family land to go and work with her family in a new land. She develops a relationship with an Appaloosa and how she eventually rescues him. Ride of Courage, Deborah Felder Molly and Sultan, an Arabian horse, have to play their part in helping the patriots in the American Revolution. Set in 1781 at the height of the war.
Here is my favourite series of horse story book reviews. Phantom Stallion Series, Terri Farley
Terri Farley focuses on an endangered species of horses, called Mustangs, which are found in the Nevada Desert. Each book focuses on some way to save or help these disappearing wild horses.
Ken lives on his father’s ranch in Wyoming. He longs for a colt to be his companion. Flika’s mother is wild and uncontrollable. So when she is born, Ken’s Dad wants to get rid of her. Ken convinces his dad to allow him to raise and own the colt. Ken and Flika have to get through sickness and strife, but remain inseparable.
The Brumby’s are an endangered species of horse found in the Australian Outback. There is an element of fantasy in these books in which the horses talk and think like people in their fight to stay alive and free. The following two horse book reviews are my favorite tutor type books for beginner horse riders.
Another beautifully photographed “how to” book to teach young riders to give their ponies (real and hoped for) the best possible care.
