Advantages of HomeschoolingOne of the hidden advantages of homeschooling - having the
ability to deal with bad attitiudes and grow godly character in you and your children.
There are always those days that are just bad! We all have them. But our attitudes need never be bad –
not about our homes, husbands, children or homeschooling. Our children also have “those kind of days” when they are not cooperative or in a slump, but they should never be allowed to be disrespectful or dishonouring to you. Here are some tips to deal with bad attitudes in you and your children.
Children's AttitudesTrain your children consistently and with grace in how to obey and honour your authority in the home. I could write a whole website on this alone, but there is a better one already done. Be sure to sign up for Linda’s reading guides at www.revived-christian-woman.com Slowly get your children to take ownership of their own work. I do not mean your little ones, but from 9 or 10 your children can do some of their work on their own. Introduce this idea with Math by first making sure your child understands their math concept and then leaving them to do their worksheet or drill work on their own. Another way to encourage independence is by using a children’s school work planner where you write up each days work on a weekend and place it in a visible place for your children. They can then get on with work that they do no need you for – like handwriting practice or math sums. This is not an issue in our house but I have been in contact with many homeschool moms who have TV problems with their children. One mom commented that her children turn on the TV in the morning and then she tussles with them all day to leave the TV alone. My best advice is: Dump the TV during the day and do not allow your children to turn it on themselves. And on this note perhaps you also need to read a back issue of my monthly Ezine where I share about computer games and Playstation type entertainment. Set up firm consequences for offenders who step over this boundary…and if the TV problem is yours, mom, then discipline yourself to not turn it on until your schoolwork, chores and other commitments are seen to for the day.
Consider this...Talking about mom’s problems…there are common issues when moms have bad attitudes in their homes.
1. Whining instead of changing For mom’s who are battling with their attitudes be sure to read my article Avoiding a bad homeschool day which gives some practical ways to prevent a bad homeschool day, but remember, as you yield your heart to His hand and obey Him when he speaks, you will achieve the dreams you have for your family. And then lastly - Mom’s – when you are with your children BE with your children – leave the to-do list for later! We can spend a whole day with our children at home but never truly be with them as our minds are running away the whole time.
