Bibles and Faith Building Book ReviewsOn this page has our favorite Bibles and faith building book reviews that we have used with our children.
This is ideal to teach younger children their Bible. It covers more that the average bible story book with some lesser known stories. It has an easy big print as well which is ideal for beginner readers.
A fabulous step up from the Beginners Bible covering each period and bible story in much detail. The interpretation of many of the stories has touched my adult heart as well.
The Book of Books by Trevor Dennis This is a wonderful way for a child to read through the Bible in a few months. It is written in the form of a narrative. Our daughter read through this book in about 1 month when she was ten. Her comment: “This is such a wonderful way to see how God’s history all fits together!” Click here to order from Amazon.com or on the cover of the book to order from Kalahari.net.
The Children’s Illustrated Bible, Dorling KindersleyA feast combining historical, geographical, cultural and archaeological studies with an excellent retelling of the Bible. In true Dorling Kindersley style the illustrations, combining drawn and photographic ones, are superb.
The Dorling Kindersley Illustrated Family BibleAgain combining historical, geographical, cultural and archaeological studies but here DK uses the New International Version text. An absolutely fabulous spread using an extensive cross reference. It is only available through Dorling Kindersley at the moment. Faith Building and Christian AnalogiesThe following faith building book reviews can either be read alones or read alouds.Janette Oke’s books Janette Oke has written numerous books for children and adults. They all display her love for teaching children Godly morals.
Specific titles we have enjoyed with young readers are:
This Little Pig , Pordy's Prickly Problem, Trouble in a Fur Coat, Who’s New at the Zoo and Spunky's Diary. They are all lovely stories teaching Christian morals through the lives and sometimes unfortunate choices of the main animal characters. You can see a list of her books through this link: Janette Oke
Tales of Karensa, Jean Cullog
There are 4 books in this series which are all analogies of the life of Christ and the role of Christians. They are set in a medieval fantasy world and have been rated by my 11yr old daughter as the best books in the faith building category that she ever read. Titles are:
Patricia St John’s Books This author takes the lives of ordinary children and use them to teach readers biblical morals and choices. Our 13 yr olds favorites are: Treasures of the Snow, Star of Light, Rainbow Garden, Tanglewood Secrets and Where the River Begins. All her titles are available from Amazon through this link: Patricia St John
Or for South African's its best to use
Kalahari.net.
Irene Howat’s Short Biographies Irene Howat has so many other short biographies which a simple search at Amazon.com children's books will reveal.
The Land of Far Beyond, Enid Blyton. This is a version of Pilgrim's Progress but some of the characters are children.
Journey's in Faithfulness, Sarah Clarkson
This is a journal type book written by a homeschool graduate. It looks at the lives of 4 women in the Bible and how they can teach young girls to be faithful in different aspects of their maturing Christian lives.
We have found that by reading through the Bibles and Faith Building Books our children have begun to grasp some deep spiritual concepts about love and forgiveness in a non confrontational manner. Other things may not happen in our busy days as a homeschooling family, but Bible time is a non-negotiable and these bible and faith building books make it and enjoyable time for all.
