Curriculum for advanced Kindergartener?

by Karen Dotzel
(Kingwood, WV, USA)

I have a soon to be 5 yr old boy who will be technically in Kindergarten next year. All the curriculums I have looked at so far, especially for language arts, deal with letters and their sounds. My son has a wonderful grasp of phonics already and is currently teaching himself to read. My question is ... do I move on to a first grade curriculum or will I be missing something that he needs? And which curriculum should I be looking at? Any suggestions? Thanks.

The beauty of homeschooling is you can adjust it to your child's needs. I have found all my 6 kids all over the map at different age levels. My two boys are 5 as well and both are at different "academic" levels.
I would suggest that you work with a program that is just right for your child...whether that be a grade 1 or 2 or a kindergarten level.
I have found a lot of the kindergarten stuff is just an introduction to different topics that are covered in the years ahead.
The most important thing is to READ ALOUD. Introduce him to the world, God's creation, wonderful stories through reading aloud to him.
What curriculum you use is really up to you. I like Charlotte Mason's approach and I have used Susan Wise Bauer's "The Well Educated Mind" as a reference at certain grade levels. Wendy has lots of choices in her curriculum review section on this site which will help you further in those choices.
The main thing is to not be concerned about missing something at this age by doing a slightly advanced program with your 5 year old. Do what best fits his curious mind.
