Five In A Row

Five in a Row was written by Jane Claire Lambert and consists of three Volumes. It covers 55 units in total and should last you 2 to 3 years. This literature based curriculum still uses picture story books as the basis for the units. Five in a Row is covers Social Studies, Language Arts, Science and Art for children ages 5 to 9 (Kindergarten-Grade 3). As a literature based curriculum it allows you to again teach different ages simultaneously. You will need to add a Maths program to make it complete from Grade 1.

This literature based curriculum uses quality children's literature as springboard to introduce and investigate the various subject areas. Books were chosen that showcase close family relationships, personal triumphs, and persevering in times of trials. In addition to content, the picture books also cover a wide range of artistic expression.

Ideas for lessons based on the story books have been suggested, it remains for the parent to formulate them into a weekly or monthly plan.

For several years now mothers have been asking, "What am I going to do after I finish FIAR?" Here is the answer. Beyond FIAR is the natural continuation of the FIAR educational journey. Designed for children ages 8-12, Beyond Five in a Row uses "chapter books" as the learning springboard to help children continue to fall in love with learning children explore two fiction and two non fiction books in each volume. Filled with lessons on History and Geography, Science, Language Arts, the Fine Arts, and Issues of Human Relationship, The guide also provides opportunities to explore a variety of career paths, extensive essay writing experience and much more. This solid addition to the Five in a aRow curriculum family continues the tradition of academic excellence parents have come to expect while using FIAR. You will want to supplement with daily mathematics, a steady flow of outside reading, grammar, spelling and penmanship.

There are 3 volumes in this series.

Potential Pitfalls

  • Many of the story books are out of print, which is a great frustration. There are plans in the pipeline to bring them back into print.
  • Again, many of the stories are for American families, but most are of an international theme.
