Inspirational Christian Book Reviews

Do you need help to grow in your relationship with your Saviour? These inspirational Christian book reviews will get you started. They are some of my favourites which stretch my mind and heart.

On The Other Side of the Garden, Virginia Fugate

So many books that deal with the topic of submission to and the respecting of our husbands tend to be one sided and written from a patriarchal perspective that it is indeed refreshing to see the balance that Virginia offers. She does not coat her words – she calls a spade a spade but does not leave a woman feeling overwhelmed with her calling and position in her home and marriage. She also spends as much time addressing the man’s role in the relationship and home.

She spends the first third of the book discussing spiritual foundations and the reasons for the “battle of the sexes”. The second section is devoted to oppositions to the biblical model of womanhood and the last how to apply biblical womanhood to practical living.

The Gentle Ways of the Beautiful Woman, Anne Ortlund

These are Anne Ortlund’s three bestselling works in one volume. Titles making up the volume are:

  • Disciplines of the Beautiful Woman

  • Disciplines of the Heart

  • Disciplines of the Home

  • Anne Ortlund deals with sincere frankness about woman’s grooming, care of the home, building her relationships and most importantly her own relationship with the Lord. These books are available as one volume or sometime in their individual titles.

    Quote:
”Then will you dare to be God’s miracle? Will you assess honestly what God has made in making you – and then have the courage to love that and be that with all your might and not other?”.

Hinds feet on high places, Hannah Hurnard

A gorgeous analogy type story about a woman who follows Jesus on a journey from brokenness and spiritual confusion to wholeness and beauty by surrendering her life to His Lordship.

This book is for those who want to press into their relationship with Jesus and discover Him as the Healer of all hurts and the only one who can make you whole.

”All the time it is suffering to love and sorrow to love, but it is lovely to love Him in spite of this, and I should cease to do so, I should cease to exist.”

The Jesus I never knew, Phillip Yancey
What do you know about Jesus? We’ve read the Bible and some books, but when you enter into relationship with Him, we gain a whole new understanding of the son of God who became man, to win you for the Kingdom.

Phillip Yancey makes sure we know that watered down, complacent Christianity is not going to win the day. Read this book and begin to grow in your personal understanding and relationship with your Messiah.

    Wild at Heart, John Eldredge
This book set many Christian men’s groups on fire, but the message is just as pertinent to woman. John Eldredge challenges one’s thinking about WHO you are and WHY you were created and WHAT your purpose is for God.

He claims most Christian men are bored and most Christian woman are pressed into a role that was not created for them. While that sounds inflammatory, it is not. For all men, woman and specifically parents, reading this book is a must.

My Utmost for His Highest, Oswald Chambers
Looking for a daily devotional that is meat and not milk as you grow in your Christianity? This revised version of Oswald Chamber’s renowned devotional is just what you need. Some many devotionals present the same old feel good themes that keep you going around in circles. Not this one – here you will be challenged to think about true holiness, desert places, hearing God’s voice, dying to self and obedience at all costs.

    The Heavenly Man, Brother Yun
Most people who read this book come away wondering about their frivolous and self indulgent lives when measured up to the suffering and persecution that this one man and many others like him have suffered for the Gospel.

Brother Yun tells his story from before knowing Jesus to a series of miracles that have won millions to the house church movement in China. Parts of this book I have read to my children but it is definitely a book for those who are more mature.
