Keepers at Home

Being Keepers at Home has the double benefit of blessing you with activity as well as your family with a beautiful space, good food, new clothes or great looking garden for example.

I used to sew all my children’s clothes until they grew older and preferred shop bought items. The sense of achievement is great when you see your child wearing one of your creations. I cannot knit even though I tried to learn – my fingers go one way, the needles and wool the other. So I left that up to Granny!

I love gardening in summer as it is something we can do as a family, although my dear husband tends to tell us what needs to be done and then quietly retreats!! Gardening especially when it involves working in my small kitchen garden is hugely rewarding. This year we have chosen to extend our veggie growing as a family project.

And I love to cook! Some folk find it a burden to prepare meals for their families. That is OK – I bet they have other skills that bless their husband and children. (See my organized mom page for help if you are one of these moms!) I went through a stage when I wanted to learn how to make pasta – all colours and with different sauces. Then I became hooked on Jamie Oliver’s recipes and worked through that book. We eat simply during the week but I enjoy experimenting on the weekends with new recipes and ideas.

My friend who paints has filled her home with her lovely paintings. Another mom I know has self made soft furnishings which imprint her personality on her home.

Other moms write poetry or are busy building small businesses along the lines of their interests. Remember not to rush out of your season, but find something that you can do with your hands. Laine, a dear homeschooling mother has a wonderful website where you can see the essence of a being keepers at home and a productive wife... and learn a lot from this humble and gentle woman of God. She can be found at Laine's Letters.
