Language of instruction

by Elaine van den Berg

I am homeschooling my 3 children: girl 9jr, girl 6jr and boy 2jr. Our home language is Afrikaans. There is a great possibility that we could be moving to Canada in the next 2/3 years. This would mean that our children would live in an "English" country. I have to make a decision on a curriculum for Gr4 and Gr1 for 2011 and am 90% sure that I want to buy the Little Footprints curriculum. The girls are quite fluent in English, but I am a firm believer in home language education. Should I purchase an English or Afrikaans curriculum?

Little Footprints - best of both.
by: Wendy

It is my opnion that a child should be taught to read and write in their mother tongue first and then to be introduced to another language.

There are other schools of thought that say that children learn other languages better under the age of 5.

Using Little Footprints allows you to get the best of both as many Afrikaans speaking families have used it to switch over to English.

Should you not want to do this and prefer instruction in Afrikaans, the parents guide is in English, but you can purchase the read alouds in Afrikaans.

All the best with your planning!
