Laundry tips
Little Steps Everyday

My laundry tips will help you to get systems in place for a smooth washday.

These laundry tips are beginners steps for those of you who need to get systems in place for this "department" to run smoothly in your busy home.

Laundry Tip no 1

Decide on how many days you will need to do your laundry. We do about 3 loads, three times a week – Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Our Monday load is much bigger than the other days. This means I wash nothing other than clothing on Monday.

Laundry Tip no 2

Decide how often you will wash your towels and linen. On Wednesday we wash our linen and on Friday our towels as these two days do not have as many clothes as there are on Monday.

Laundry Tip no 3

Make sure you have the "hardware" that you need. By this I mean:

  • Sufficient wash baskets

  • Detergents

  • Washing machine in order

  • Wash line or dryer

  • Pegs
  • A good tip learnt from another homeschool mom is to have separate baskets next to each other for lights, darks and colours.
    Laundry Tip no 4

Get your children to help you by sorting their washing as they put it in the baskets. Lights in one, darks in another and colours in a third.

If your children are older you can print off my detailed chore descriptions where they can have printed step by step instructions how to do the laundry themselves.

    Laundry Tip no 5

On wash day get your washing going as early as you can in the morning. I tend to do this before we all eat breakfast.

After breakfast the first load is ready to go on the line or in the dryer and the next load can be put into the washing machine.

I continue in this way until all our laundry is done and drying on the line and in the dryer.

In the evening we all fold washing together and separate it into piles belonging to each family member. All clothing that needs ironing goes into a wash basket for our domestic worker to tend to.

    Laundry Tip no 6

Before I had domestic help I used to iron the clothing left from washday. I must be totally honest with you…I do not like this job but it needed to get done and the way that made it do-able for me was to iron while watching a video or favorite TV program. What can you do to make this job more amiable?

    Laundry Tip no 7

My last tip is about your heart attitude. When faced with a mountain of laundry or a good book or chat on the phone…what will you choose? I know that not all housework makes a homeschooling mom jump up and down for joy...but it is all necessary part of blessing your family. There are a few favorite smells that I have and one of them that ranks highly is the smell of fresh linen on my bed and in my children’s rooms.

It takes a fair amount of perseverance to make keeping up with your laundry a habit...but it’s worth it...So give it a try!
