Living books for Living Children

How do you get a child to read Charlotte Mason type books if he only likes to read books that are full of facts only? He only wants to read true stories, not classics or anything else. When he writes, his papers are short and to the point.

True Stories
by: Liza

Hello,

Have you tried giving him true stories, even though they aren't "fact" books? He may like them because they are true/real. For instance, biographies written in narrative form about scientists, athletes, historical figures (i.e., Sir Ernest Shackleton - the guy who went to Antartica and barely survived, he and his crew). There are some great books out there that are written well about people, as opposed to the "fact"-oriented books that kids usually use for research papers.
Hope you find something for him. He sounds like an extremely bright kid.

Finding the balance.
by: Wendy

Mmmmh, I have a child who also likes factual books and it is his nature that requires attention to detail that I think makes him who he is and desire to read what he reads.

I make sure that our read aloud times are full of living books to balance his reading.

I also think it is important to make the distinction between a "Charlotte Mason" type book with a classic. Classics do not always meet the criteria for a living book.
