Organize your laundry

The need to organize your laundry as a homeschooling mom is an important task so that this job does not take more time from your family life than necessary.

Taking the time to organize your laundry means that your family will have the clothes they need when they need them, especially your husband, as well as clean towels and linens for your home.

Many homeschooling families are large so this page is specifically for you. Some of these tips are from my life’s lessons and others that I have gained from forums and e-loops.

Let’s get started…

If you have a mountain of washing and no system in place you can use my beginner’s steps to organize your laundry . This is a 7 day crash course to get your mountain conquered. You can sign up below for daily email reminders which will last 7 days.

The ever increasing pile...

There is a rule similar to a law that states “The more laundry you have the less you feel like doing it!” Seriously, the need to organize your laundry is almost as important as the need to plan your meals. We need clothing...we could live without it in some cultures, but most of us need clothing!

In the past my husband has said he knows that I have thought of him when he opens his cupboard to find clean clothes for work – especially underwear! So what I am trying to say is - It’s got to get done!

Wash basket placement

This is a key issue about organizing your laundry. We place out wash baskets in the bathroom where the children can plop their clothes into them as they bath or shower in the evenings. Likewise in our bathroom I have a pretty laundry basket as part of our décor. You can read more about bathroom organization here

Another homeschooling mom has a laundry hamper in each of the children’s bedrooms. She has found this to work for them.

Other families have their baskets in the laundry room and each basket is labeled for lights, darks and colors. This way there is no need to sort on wash day.

The Earlybird...

Try and get your laundry on as early in the morning as possible. This way by the time you sit down to schoolwork your laundry should all be on the line or in the process of drying.

Avoid leaving wet washing in your machine overnight as it will mean that you will have musty smelling clothing the next day.

Get your children to help

My philosophy is simple: they dirtied the clothes, towels or linen so they can help with the cleaning of it. This may mean different things for each age group.

  • Young children can be taught to put dirty items in the wash basket

  • Older children can help strip beds and place in the wash basket

  • Still older children can get loads of washing going as well as hang it on the line and fold it afterwards.
