Saxon math 5/4

I love the material covered, very thorough, and the lesson plans are easy and clear. However, and it's a big however, more time each day is spent practicing review material than actually practicing material from the lesson. It's as is if there's no way the publishers believe you got it the first time round (and it's quite possible with so little practice of the new topic when it's first introduced!).

I like the layout of having a seperate book with the worksheets, but they are very basic and never cover the more advanced material. How many times can you do a double-sided multiplication page and still not know it? So, we use it for content but there;s no earthly way following a Charlotte Mason short-lesson approach that you could cover all the material in the recommended way each day. If you're going to use it, don't expect to use it exactly as laid out by the publisher.

Saxon 5/4

You are so right! We typically do half the lesson. If I feel my children need review on a concept then we do a couple more of those examples/problems from that particular lesson but if they know a concept already (thoroughly I mean) then we have been known to skip a lesson! This does not happen very often but works especially well for my son. We are very satisfied with Saxon overall--I think Math is both my children's favorite subject! Godspeed!
