Self Education - caring for your mind.

Self Education is making the choice to continue learning and stretching your mind in the midst of your daily responsibilities as a wife and mother.

Self Education and the growing of your mind is an active choice you need to make. I know as much as any homeschooling mom that as we learn alongside our children. We are being exposed to new ideas and thoughts all the time from the content of what our children are learning. As I read the fabulous Sonlight books with them I am amazed with what I learn at my level.

But the caring for your mind is something greater. Karen Andreola in her wonderful book A Charlotte Mason Companion says: “If we would do our best for our children, grow we must. On our growth depends not only our future happiness, but our future usefulness.” Her chapter called “Mother Culture” is inspiring reading for any mother.

If we ever find ourselves dragging through our days in a cloud and fog, I would suggest that it is time for you to gain a new interest, learn about something new, and visit somewhere that will enlighten your mind.

Practically how do you do this? I think the starting point for many woman is to acknowledge that they need time out. There are many in the homeschooling movement who would make you feel less of a mother if you chose to take time every other day to pursue an interest. It is often hard for us to say to our children: " It is now time for mommy." Then take that time first making sure none are hungry tired or uncared for.

In the past I have taken evening courses at our local highschool where I have learnt how to make teddy bears. I did a 6 week water colour painting course. I also did a photography course. I also take piano lessons once a week. This year most of my time has been taken up with a whole new learning curve in building this website.

Others I know take great joy in scrapbooking, card making, pottery lessons and a host of other hobbies.

If you have lost yourself in your children then begin to think of something that you used to enjoy doing. I have a friend who spends her Sunday afternoon painting while her husband takes her boys for a ride. This was a latent passion she had for many years. Self Education is a choice...will you make it?

For a long time the time spent developing my mind was simply reading inspirational Christian books. I would also write in my journal the quotes that I wanted to remember and the writings that moved my heart.

"Do not think this is a selfish thing to do, because the advantage does not end with yourself." Charlotte Mason.
