Starting Homeschooling

(JHB, SA)

HI

My name is Paula (Jhb) - SA & we have just taken our 3 kids out of a pvt school to start homeschooling!! I have a son in grade 6, son in grade 4 & little girl (grade 1). As my two boys are struggling with English & Maths (seems something went wrong in their foundation phase) & of course the teachers don't really have the time nor inclination to try & help them, hence the decision to homeschool!

I just wanted to know if you know where I could get my hands on some "free" material for English and Mathematics guide (or remedial worksheets for grade 6 & 4 in both subjects) as I feel that to continue with all subjects until the remainder of the year would be pointless - I really feel that I should get them up to speed for the remainder of the year - basically just focus of their foundation!

I have employed a qualified teacher (who specialises in remedial too) - a God send as I believe she will really be able to see where they have gone wrong and get them up to the level for their age! Poor chaps only ever got negative feedback from school and their confidence level has really been affected!

I believe you also have weekly worksheets too - how can I get these?

Can you also advise on material for grade 1 for daughter (online free material) - until we have decided for all of them what curriculum we will order.

Do you also know of any home school social network community in Johannesburg where they can start making friends & get them involved in events/get togethers etc?

Any help would be appreciated!

Yours in our awesome Lord!

Blessings - Paula

Hi Paula, we have just removed our little one (Gr. 2)from private school for exactly the same reason. He is a very active yet highly intelligent 7 year old & has struggling at school & this has caused him to dislike school.

Fortunately I have had some assistance from his playgroup teacher in addressing some of his issues, but we're having to go back as far as Gr. R to address his foundation in order to get him to reach his full potential.

We have signed him up with Le-Amen Education Centre in 12 Totius Road, Amorosa, Ruimsig. 011 958-0366. They supply you with all your materials. Both parents have to check & sign their books three times a year & hand them in for moderation by qualified teachers. They then advise the parents which areas need more work etc. & at the end of the year they issue the child with a report. The high school kids write the same IEB exams as the private schools. Their price is also very reasonable. We'll be paying less than R5000 for each of them next year.

I have also signed my little one up with www.time4learning.com to help him put the fun back in to learning activities.

Our eldest doesn't have the foundational issues, as he didn't graduate Gr R at private school but will finish his Gr. 7 at private school & move to homeschooling next year because he's not reaching his full potential either due to all the pressure of schooling. He also often complains that school is boring, thus we want to supplement his schooling with some chalenges.

We will also be needing support & friends for the boys. Pse contact me on trys.schwartz@gmail.com so we can hook up & support each other.
Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Kind regards & God bless
Trys

Hello Paula :)
I am so sorry to hear that your school & teachers have failed your children.
There are alot of Freebies out there like
http://www.vocabulary.co.il
http://www.spellingcity.com
http://www.learninggamesforkids.com

For a great whole curriculum to help fill the gaps while you are trying to decide what to buy or to use period is a online program called http://www.time4learning.com

We use all of the above and my children love it...The great thing is they can learn at thier own pace and I also love that T4L is less then $20 a month...
Good Luck ..HTH :)
