Unschooling?

by Amanda
(Tampa, fl, USA)

Hi! I am a CSAHM of 4 (8,6,5,2). We use no curriculum. I simple print the state standards and work backwards. I have no structure we just wing it everyday. So far my babies are very ahead, listen during teachable moments, and have so much time to be kids. I see so many homeschool moms on here working their tails off planning, organizing, cleaning, choosing curriculum, setting up a homeschool room, etc. I have become to feel guilty for just letting mine learn through life with occassional spontaneous assignments out of my own head. I have no idea where to start and feel I am cheating them out of potential. They are ahead as far as grade level but I know they could do even better. Any suggestions?
Thanks! Amanda

Thank you for the encouragement! They are amazing kids, all love the Lord (they write songs to Him, something they iniciated), they love each other (my daughter was angered because another girl at a playground said aren't brothers annoying- my girl said no my brother is my best friend.) As for loving books - I have to beg them to stop reading and go play. They are all above on the 3 R's... Soooo I guess despite my lack of structure or curriculum they are doing well.
Thank you again! It is easy for us Moms to feel guilty when we see other "super" moms.
God bless!

Hi Amanda

You really need not fret about this. Homeschoolers come in all forms from the intense accelerated planners to the relaxed homeschoolers.

You need to determine this for your own home and by looking at the fruit of your children's lives.

Somethings to think about:
1. Do they obey?
2. Am I teaching them to love and serve the Lord?
3. Can they read/write/add/subtract? (Age appropriate)
4. Do they love books?
5. Do they love their siblings?

These are the things to consider when you think you are "doing them in" by not using a curriculum. Even though a curriculum will not teach them some of those characteristics!

As they get older you will find the need for more formal studies, but if they are loving learning in your relaxed way, do not fret, keep on!
