Working solo

by Elanie
(Cape Town, South Africa)

My child indicated to me that she was ready to work on her own, eg follow lesson plans and then complete the answer sheets. This is for non-discipline studies. She's 11,5 years old. Things seemed to be going well, but as this term (South Africa) is nearing an end, I am realizing that she's not ready to work on her own yet.

My question: should I go back to 100% instruction (which seemed to work perfect) or should I just encourage more? Ocationally come alongside to "check up"? I feel not to carry on spoonfeeding all the way. It's however not about me, but about her wanting to take on responsibility. Maybe I just didn't realize how big a step it is to work on your own.

In other areas she does very well - practising piano diligently, doing well at ballet, doing chores as expected and keeping her room reasonably tidy.

Thanks for any ideas - in the meantime I'm praying!

A bit of both
by: Wendy

When our children indicated that they were ready to work on their own we phased it in with one subject at a time. When they showed that they were completing the work diligently and grasping the subject matter we would add another subject for working independently.

If the standard shifted for the worse, or we found that they were not understanding the work, we would pick that up again as something to do together again.

The key is to encourage her efforts and not undermine her self confidence but at the same time help her understand that she may not be ready to "leave the nest" yet.
